You have been washing your hair for the last decades thinking you were doing it right. Sorry to let you know, you were wrong! You’ll be surprised to know that washing your hair is not just about getting the best products on the market. You must also apply the right motions. Here are 6 mistakes that most people make when it comes time to wash their hair.

5. Don’t Wash Your Hair Every Day

You should never wash your hair every day. That said, “The frequency should depend on your lifestyle, your environment and the desired outcome,” says Danilo Dixon, Pantene’s stylist. “But you should have a complete shampoo and conditioner routine at least twice a week to make your hair look beautiful and silky.” If your hair is dry or damaged, not washing it every day can help to moisturize it with natural oils says Birnur Aral, Director of the GH Beauty Lab.

4. Mixing Products

“Shampoos and conditioners are developed and tested for their effectiveness in pairs, allowing their manufacturers to optimize ingredients for their individual functions,” says Birnur Aral, Ph.D., director of the GH Beauty Lab. “Mixing brands and collections can produce less effective results.” It is therefore recommended to avoid mixing brands.

3. Excess of Product

Use your products sparingly. Start with a small amount and add more if needed. “Excess shampoo will not clean your hair, it will make it harder to rinse, and excess conditioning may leave deposits on your scalp,” says Danusia Wnek, chemist at GH Beauty Lab.

2. Don’t Forget To Clean Your Scalp

Evenly distribute your shampoo on your scalp. People tend to put the cleaning products on one place and end up not getting a thorough cleaning. “Put some product in your palms, and then use your fingers to spread it from your scalp to the ends,” says Dixon of Pantene.

1. Leave Product Residue in Your Hair

Take the time to rinse your hair well. If you have curly or damaged hair, gently disentangle them with a wide-tooth comb before rinsing them.
