Even if you don’t have a cat, your backyard is probably the favourite place for the local neighbourhood cats. You probably often see them strolling around any time of year. Cats like to loll in gardens and backyards of your neighbourhood, especially in the summer. Here are 15 ways to ward off these felines from your land without harming them.
15. Encourage castration

A sterilized or castrated cat won’t try to mark its territory by urinating in your garden. They will stroll around and nap, that’s it! Talk to your neighbours about the benefits of castration (it also increases the life expectancy of cats) so everyone will be happy.
14. Water gun: a powerful weapon

You probably already know this but cats hate water. Don’t hesitate to spray cats that ruin your garden.
13. Plants

Cats hate certain odors. Geraniums, lemongrass, thyme, and lavender will discourage cats from entering your garden. Plant some all over your home.
11. Fenced plants

Put a fence around your plants or your vegetable garden. You can also cover them with a net.
10. A log

By placing a log under your trees, you avoid having claw marks all over your trees.
9. Chestnuts

Chestnuts can serve as a warning sign for cats: “Attention! this is a forbidden zone!” Place them all around your backyard.
7. Toothpicks: very practical

Cats tend to nap on your seedlings. To break this bad habit, plant a few toothpicks in strategic areas.
6. Prickly mulching

Organic net mulching is also a great solution to ward off cats. It is harsher than straw…Those cats won’t want to hang around your garden anymore.
5. Mustard

You can repel cats with mustard. Here is how to do it:
- Dilute 1 part mustard with 1 part water.
- Spray the mixture in areas where cats hang out.
- Do this trick every 2 days for 1 to 2 weeks.
4. Pepper

Pepper is a great repellent against cats. Felines hate the peppery smell of the spice.
- Use freshly ground black pepper.
- Sprinkle some in your garden.
- Repeat as often as you need.
3. Mothballs or naphthalene

Naphthalene, also known as mothballs, is an affordable way of warding cats off your backyard since they hate this odor. Place some mothballs close to plants or trees around your backyard, and that’s it!
