Many people think that gardening is not made for them. Yet, even though we’re not all born with a green thumb, we can all easily become a pro of this seasonal hobby. In order for this to happen, you need to know some good tips and to start slowly, with easier projects. Quickly, your gardening fears can quickly transform themselves into a passion.
1. Choose the right place for your garden
Your garden needs:
- To get 6-8 hours of sun daily;
- To be close to a source of water;
- To be 5 meters away from the roots of a tree.
2. The earth and the type of garden
In order for your vegetables to grow adequately, your soil needs to be rich and drain well. You can, obviously, enrich it with compost and organic fertilizer. If you’re not sure of what you want to plant, there are some vegetables that are easier to grow than others, Start with radishes, zucchinis, cherry tomatoes, green beans, spinach, and peppers.
3. Variety is key
Plant different kinds of vegetables in your garden to ward off parasites and to favour the sharing of water and of nutrients.
4. Water adequately
Water your garden wisely. You don’t need to water your garden more than twice a week.
5. Take care of your garden
Once or twice a week, take the time to remove all the weeds from your garden. They spread quickly and can absorb water and the necessary nutrients that make your vegetables grow. To get rid of them, spray some white wine vinegar directly on the weeds.
6. Reuse what you already have
Why spend money in a store when you can reuse materials you already have at home like toilet paper rolls to make small biodegradable planters for your seeds or an old shower caddy to hang your plants.
7. Start with easy flowers
Here is a list of plants and flowers that are easy to grow:
- Sweet pea : Plant 4-5 of them and keep 50 cm distance between each;
- Daisy : Plant the seeds in your garden during the month of May;
- Cosmos : Plant them during the month of May;
- Phlox : Plant them during the month of March, April or September;
- Ipomoea : Plant 5-6 seeds and keep 50 cm distance between each;
- Hosta : This plant does not need a lot of care, sun nor water.
