Summer is the perfect season to have a garden but also to have a vegetable garden. Indeed, what’s better than to eat the fruits and vegetables that come directly from your own garden? 1. Plant your tomatoes in a lot of light and in an airy space
If you wish to have nice tomato plants, make sure to leave at least 70 cm between each feet. This way, the air can circulate between the tomato plants. You will also avoid the spread of sicknesses between the plant and will allow them to take advantage of a maximum of 10 hours of light during the day during the summertime.
2. Rotate where you place your plants
Do you want to know the secret for your tomato plants to grow properly? The trick is to rotate where you plant your tomatoes every year. By doing this, you reduce the risks of your plants getting diseases transmitted by the earth (for example, mildew or brown spots).
3. Opt for robust roots
Is it time to choose your tomato plants? Take the time to look at their roots. There’s no use in buying seedlings that have nice leaves if their roots are not solid nor deep since when you plant them, these will take a long time to grow.
4. Make sure to bury the stems
It is important to bury the stems. Make sure you bury your seedlings all the way to the first leaves. The new roots will grow more easily on the stem.
5. Water your plants extensively
To have tasty tomatoes, water them extensively once a week and water them around every 5 days during the summer. Opt for a watering can with a pump. This will diffuse water more easily. Also, water your tomatoes at the earth level, not on the leaves.
6. Avoid cutting the small branches from your plants
Many gardeners think that we need to remove the small branches from the tomato plants but this is not the case. In fact, by letting these stems grow, you will get flowers as well as fruit since these branches are actually secondary branches.
7. Use plant stakes
If you want to have tasty tomatoes, you need to install plant stakes to help them grow. You can put 1.80-metre pickets to support them vertically. If you are growing cherry tomatoes, opt for 1.20-metre pickets. Make sure you plant the pickets before you plant your tomatoes in the earth so not to damage the roots.
8. Add some compost
When you start seeing that your fruit has ripened, add some compost close to the plant’s stem. You can also encourage the fruit’s growth by cutting the superior leaves of the stem.
9. Plant other tomatoes
Three weeks after planting your tomatoes, plant other tomato plants. This will ensure you always have new tomatoes.
10. Harvesting the fruit
Harvest your tomatoes when they are ripe, either when they are the right size or when they are the right colour. Then, all you have to do is savour them!
