Most of you use scented candles, instead of natural oil in orange peels, to give a pleasant fragrant scent to your interior. Whether it’s for a romantic evening, to relax in your bath or to eliminate unpleasant odors of cooking, candles’ perfume release the stress leading to comfort and intimacy.

A Harmful Habit

The candles smell good and are pleasant because of the smell they release, but what you do not know is that hidden under its sweet perfume are toxic products, harmful for your health, but also for the environment. Stop relying on the word “air purifier” that manufacturers constantly put forward. What they do not say clearly, however, is how to properly use them and the dangers they may have, especially for very young children.

A pneumologist and allergist at the CHR of the Citadel in Liège, Belgium, Dr. Maud Deschampheleire, says that “the combustion phenomenon itself has an irritating effect on the respiratory tract and the perfumes contained in these candles play a Additional irritative role “. When a candle burns, the temperature of the flame varies, causing water, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide to emit very severe reactions. The lower the temperature of the flame, the greater the risk that molecules of benzene and carcinogenic microparticles will form.

Candle’s Composite

Generally, candles are made from these 3 types of waxes.

Paraffin

It is the most economical type of wax and is obtained from petroleum.

Beeswax and Vegetable Wax

These two types of waxes are natural, but quite more expensive. This explains why they are usually mixed with paraffin. This reduces costs and ensures that candles last longer.

The perfume of candles can be obtained from syntheses based perfumes or with the aid of essential oils. However, once again, they are more expensive because they are less chemical. Unfortunately, synthetic perfumes contain an ingredient that is extremely dangerous to your health.

Fortunately, there is a way to make your own crafty candle. The advantage is that it is entirely natural, and thus, does not present any risk to your health! In addition, it is a very economical way to wrap your space with a pleasant smell. All that you will need is an orange!

How to Create A Candle With an Orange?

Orange has many excellent virtues for your health. Its juicy and sweet flesh gives you several essential nutrients for your body and its skin will be very useful to you to create surprising candles comforting.

Ingredients

  • 1 orange
  • 2 Tablespoons of rapeseed or sunflower seed oil
  • 1 lighter or matches

Preparation

  1. Using a knife, wrap your orange horizontally to obtain two identical halves of skin.
  2. Gently remove from the top, making sure not to tear off the small white stem that binds the flesh to the skin, since it will be your wick. This part of the skin will be your base while the second half will serve as a decorative hat. You can cut the patterns you like.
  3. Immerse the wick in a few inch of oil and let it soak for a few seconds.
  4. Light it, then cover it with your hat.

Note that 2 tablespoons of oil will allow your wick to burn for about 2 hours. It is best to place your craft candle in a cup to avoid damage. You can also place it in water and let it float!

You can use grapefruits to have larger candles.
