These aren’t ladybugs

Many homes are encircled by these insects that look a lot like pretty and harmless ladybugs, but they are not harmless and can be quite dangerous.

Even people who hate all kinds of insects usually don’t mind ladybugs. Not just because if they land on you it is considered lucky, but also because they are cute and harmless little beetles. And if a swarm of ladybugs invades your home, you may be disturbed, but certainly not terrified.

In central Texas, many residents will feel something similar. But instead of ladybugs, their homes will become infested with Asian beetles. Although they look like adorable ladybugs, they are anything but friendly, and these non-native species have stolen the appearance of ladybugs to be accepted and to blend in.

Since they look so similar, what can be really different between ladybugs and Asian beetles? The truth is terrifying. While ladybugs are totally harmless, Asian beetles bite and try to feed on humans.

4. “They’re used to tasting the things they’re landing on,”

“They’re used to tasting the things they’re landing on,” said University of Texas entomologist Dr. Alex Wild.

As you can guess by the name, Asian beetles are not native to Texas or the United States. This undesirable Japanese beetle was originally introduced in the southern states of the United States in the 1960s to help control pests. Now, these creatures are terrorizing Texans and invading their homes.

Asian beetles “are attracted to illuminated surfaces” (such as sunlit walls) and “are such a nuisance” in many parts of the United States when fall arrives “they affect the quality of life” said the College of Agriculture at the University of Kentucky.

3. A nuisance for many homes

If you are in trouble with the infestations of these horrible beetles, you are not alone. Because of the cold of winter, these Asian beetles want to find a safe harbour before the arrival of the frost. For this reason, they find refuge in your home and other buildings.

WARNING: Do not crush Asian beetles. When they are crushed, they release a harmful odour that gives nausea. They also leave behind a yellow spot on any surface on which they were crushed. Avoid that at all costs.

2. Don’t let them stay in your home permanently

If you see these insects in your home, it’s time to act now. Unless you do not care to be bitten at night or see them hurt your animals, you will not like that if you are in an orderly house.

If they invade your home, Dr. Wild suggests a simple solution to remove them: your vacuum.

1. In the news…

Recently, in Kansas, a dog known to have hunted insects around the yard, started to sleep a lot more often and started skipping meals. The owner of the pet was worried, but would never have imagined this outcome…

Suddenly, his dog started to throw foam through his mouth! The owner was scared and took the dog to the vet. There, the professionals found the truth shocking. About thirty Asian beetles were hanging from the palate of the dog’s mouth.

If you spot Asian beetles at home, do not wait a single second before taking action. They may look like pretty, harmless ladybugs, but they are far from that.
