The interior decorating specialist Gina Ciancio has all the best advice you need to make your house ready for the change of season. Yes, winter is almost over, so it’s time to prepare your home for the arrival of spring! Traditionally, springtime is a period of decluttering, which give us time to deep clean our homes to get rid of stuff. It is also an excellent time to adopt some of the latest colours of the season and to refresh the look of our rooms. Here is how to say goodbye to winter and welcome spring in 10 steps.

1. Update your linens

Put away your heavy cushioned bedding, furs or velvet throws and opt for lighter and brighter ones instead. Light white throws are the perfect base for a springtime style. You can add colour and texture to your pillows and duvet cover. Be aware that cool colours mixed with neutral colours such as peach tones should be the trendiest colours this season.

2. Replace your pillows

Your pillows are just as important as the appearance of your bed! You should normally replace your pillows every 6 to 12 months, so if you can not remember the last time you bought new pillows, it’s probably a good time to change them. While you’re at it, wash your mattress protector too.

3. Opt for plants

Decorating your home with houseplants is always a good idea. Not only will plants add an elegant look to your home decor, but in addition, they purify the air and improve our health.

4. Create the feeling of space

Cleaning is never fun, but it is worth it. To declutter your house appropriately, attack one room at a time and organize items you no longer need by stacking them into “give,” “sell,” and “throw away” piles. You will feel much better once you have created space in your home and at the same time you will help people.

5. Introduce a new colour palette in your living room

Simply updating the colours of your cushions in your living room or changing the colour of some home decor accessories can create a totally different mood in your home. If you’re not too daring when it comes to changing the colour of your house’s walls, try the 60-30-10 rule, where 60% of the pieces in the room are one colour, 30% another colour and 10% a more neutral colour. For example, you could paint 60 percent of the room in soft gray, 30 percent in peach and 10 percent in white. By adding indoor plants (like mentioned above) with other decorating accessories such as candles and books will complement your home decor wonderfully.

6. Have space outside where you can relax

Now that it’s hot enough (or almost hot enough!) to enjoy the outdoors again, why not create a space where you can sit outside? It does not matter if you have a large space or just a small balcony, you can have a comfortable place to sit, personalize it with a little colour and put lush plants that you watch grow as you drink your favourite drink.

7. Consider adding an accent wall in your house

Accent walls were very popular in the 2000s. They are making a comeback this year. They add personality and colour to our homes. You can also opt for removable wallpaper with oversized flower patterns or with a textured finish. Thus, when you no longer like the design, you only have to remove it.

8. Illuminate your decor

A free and quick way to make your home lighter and brighter is simply to open your windows. You will have more natural light in your rooms and a breeze of freshness will circulate through your home.

9. Change the location of your furniture

Another way to “refresh” the look of your home is to move the furniture and decor around. It may sound a bit odd, but it’s amazing the transformation it can make and it’s a good alternative to buying new furniture or decorating accessories. For example, if you have a decorative chair near the fireplace, think of moving it near a window instead. Or if all your furniture is facing the television, consider reversing the orientation to enjoy a different view or perspective. Even moving furniture from room to room can make a big difference.

10. Update your interior perfumes

Preparing your home for the arrival of spring is not just about decorating. This also applies to indoor fragrances. Take the time to change your candles and all the other odorous products in your home (for example, essential oil dispensers). This can have a powerful effect on how you feel at home.
