Here are several things to keep in mind so you can mow your grass easily, efficiently and safely.
1. Plan your lawn mowing
If you are planning a landscaping project or major changes that will affect a large area of your property, consider mowing your lawn.
- Decide how much lawn you plan to mow. Find tips to help you;
- For example, design the lawn into a rectangle or oval shape. This will help you avoid narrow bends and lanes when mowing the lawn;
- Install benches and other accessories away from the areas that will be mowed;
- If mowing is difficult under trees, cut down low branches or choose a plant cover.
2. Cut one-third of the lawn at a time
- Mow your lawn frequently so you only cut the top third of the blades of grass each time you mow.
- If the recommended height for your lawn is five centimetres, mow it when it reaches eight centimetres.
- Use a bagging device or rake up excess cuttings.
3. Mow twice instead of once
If the lawn is growing too fast, mow it twice.
- Set the mower blade to the highest position for the first mowing. Cut the lawn again, a few days later, with a lower blade intensity this time.
4. Mowing a sloped terrain
To mow a sloped terrain, make cuts perpendicular to the slope.
- Going up and down a slope with a lawnmower is not only tiring but also dangerous.
- Try alternatives (for example, planting plant covers or spreading shrubs).
- If your lawn is on a slope, it is best not to mow it in most cases.
5. Mow only dry grass
Avoid mowing your lawn if it is wet.
- The cut will not be even and the turf will clump together, forming clods that can choke the lawn.
- Wet grass can also clog the mower, making a mess around the blade.
- The lawn will also be slippery. This can make mowing dangerous.
6. Leave the grass longer sometimes
Leave the grass longer when it suffers from stress, heat or drought.
- Longer blades of grass promote the growth of deep roots and refresh the crown of plants.
- Cutting grass too short affects its resistance to disease and allows weed seeds to germinate by letting more light into the soil.
Also leave your lawn growing at the end of the year, when the grass growth slows down.
- Lawns are more resistant to winter when they keep blades of grass above their crowns.
Mow the lawn shorter in the spring when the temperature is colder and the grass is growing quickly. Keep it in the shade to promote its growth.
